General questions about ABA

How many hours of ABA a week will my child need?

It depends on the assessment and your family’s schedule. Practice guidelines describe focused ABA at roughly 10 to 25 hours of direct treatment a week and comprehensive ABA at roughly 30 to 40. Your BCBA recommends a number, explains why, and fits it around school or preschool.

How the assessment sets hours

How soon will we see progress?

Nobody can promise a timeline. Your technician records data every session, and the BCBA goes over it with you on a regular schedule. Insurance plans also review progress before they renew approved hours.

How parents track progress with us

What is ABA therapy?

Applied behavior analysis teaches skills by breaking them into small steps, practicing them often and rewarding progress. For young kids most of it looks like play. Goals usually cover communication, play, self-care and behavior that gets in the way of learning.

Early intervention ABA

Is ABA harmful?

Some autistic adults have criticized ABA, especially older programs built on drills and compliance. Those concerns deserve a real answer. Ask any provider what happens when a child says no, how they use play and interests, and who sets the goals. Our plans are play-based, and you help choose the goals.

How parents shape the plan

What is the difference between a BCBA and an RBT?

A BCBA has a graduate degree, supervised fieldwork and a board exam, and runs the assessment, writes the plan and supervises. An RBT completes 40 hours of training, a competency check and an exam, and runs day-to-day sessions under a BCBA. You can look up either one in the BACB registry.

BACB certificant registry

What does an ABA session look like?

A technician works with your child for a set block of time at home, in the clinic, at school or in the community. A session mixes play, practice of target skills and breaks, and the technician records data along the way. The BCBA joins some sessions to check progress and coach you.
