What parent training is

ABA parent training, also called caregiver skills training, teaches you the same methods your child’s therapists use, so progress keeps going during the many hours no therapist is there. Your BCBA explains each method in plain language, shows how it works with your child and coaches you while you try it during real routines.

Caregiver skills training for Utah families

Caregiver skills training is for whoever cares for your child day to day. Parents come most often, but grandparents, a nanny or an older sibling who handles after-school hours can join too, so everyone uses the same words and responses.

Sessions happen at home in Draper and the nearby towns we serve, at our clinic, or by video, which works well for parents with long commutes up and down the valley. Caregiver training is part of most ABA treatment plans, and many plans cover it alongside your child’s therapy. We check yours before sessions start.

Inside a parent training session

  1. 1

    Start with your hardest moment

Your BCBA asks which part of the day is toughest right now, such as mornings, car rides or leaving the park.

  2. 2

    Learn one method

You practice a single technique, like giving two choices, using first-then language or noticing calm behavior.

  3. 3

    Try it with coaching

You use it with your child while your BCBA gives specific feedback in the moment.

  4. 4

    Leave with a plan

You go home with a short plan for when and how to use it before the next session.

Can parent training happen by video?

Often, yes. Many sessions work well over video, so you can join from work or after the kids are in bed.

Do I need to be at every session?

No, but the more you join, the better it works. The BCBA will suggest a schedule you can keep.
