What is replacing ABA therapy?

Nothing has replaced ABA therapy, but the way it is practiced has changed a lot. Many programs have moved away from long tabletop drills toward play-based teaching built on a child’s interests, often called naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions. They also put more weight on a child’s assent, comfort and choices.

Families also combine ABA with other therapies rather than choosing one. Speech therapy, occupational therapy and developmental approaches often work alongside it, depending on the child. Some families choose those instead of ABA. The best fit depends on your child’s needs and your goals. When comparing providers, ask what a session looks like, how they use play, how they handle refusal, and how you’ll be involved.
